Lieutenant General Satish Nambiar (Retired)

Since his retirement from the Indian military, Lt. Gen. Nambiar has been actively engaged in the study and analysis of UN peacekeeping operations, national security matters, and international relations. He was elected to the Council of the United Service Institution of India in 1995 and became the Director of the Institution in 1996. Lt. Gen. Nambiar is on the International Advisory Council of the Folke Bernadotte Academy, Sandoverken, Sweden. Since September 2002, he has been advising the government of Sri Lanka on certain aspects of the peace process in that country. In 2003 he was nominated by the Secretary General of the United Nations to serve on a 16-member high-level panel set up to study global security threats and recommend measures for effective collective action. Lt. Gen. Nambiar is also a life member of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, New Delhi and an associate member of the India International Centre in New Delhi.

Lt. Gen. Nambiar saw active service in India’s northwestern and northeastern theatres, including counter-insurgency operations, and the 1965 and 1971 conflicts on the sub-continent. As Director General of Military Operations at Army Headquarters, he led two defense delegations in discussions with Pakistani counterparts in 1991 in New Delhi and Islamabad. He received his military training from the Indian Military Academy, holds a Masters Degree in Defense Studies from the University of Madras and was on the faculty of the Defense Services Staff College at Wellington in the Nilgiris.

Lt. Gen. Nambiar is regularly invited to present at various international symposia, seminars, and bilateral and multilateral discussions. He contributes regularly to periodicals and journals on national security, international relations and peace operations and has authored chapters in international publications on peace operations, international intervention, and just war and genocide.
