Spring 2010
Conference on Asia in the Americas: Marketing and Geopolitics in the 21st Century

The conference has a dual purpose: First, it brings together thought leaders from the private sector, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and diverse academic disciplines to focus on the multi-dimensional impact of Asia’s contemporary presence in Latin America in four general topic areas. Second, it provides a platform for the presentation and discussion of original research and perspectives that concentrates on three critical aspects of this burgeoning phenomenon, including their prospective implications and consequences: (a) the future of Asia—particularly China and India—and the impact on the Latin American market and culture, or any single country or cluster of countries within the region; (b) related problems and opportunities in Latin American energy and natural resource development, acquisition, storage, distribution and security; and (c) types, nature and extent of shifts in geopolitical and soft power in Latin America (applying Joseph Nye’s soft power definition “the ability to get what you want through attraction rather than through coercion and payment,” whether at the level of nation, corporation or individual leader). It is understood that cross-border relationships in one or more of the topic areas generate implications, predictable and unforeseen, beyond the particular national units or parties of interest involved, as do the trade arrangements and activities in which they engage.

Supporting Partner, Innovation in India and China: How to Create Value from Emerging Markets
Cambridge University

The Centre for India & Global Business is proud to partner with the Marketing Science Institute (MSI) and Blood Orange Media to host a seminar that explores the rise of India and China as both fast-growing global markets and world-class sources of innovation. Even as the world sinks into a global recession, the Indian and Chinese economies are expected to continue to grow, on the strength of their vast domestic markets. But many Western companies struggle to devise the right business model(s) and marketing strategies that can help them penetrate and succeed in both giant Asian markets. This conference will explore the best practices for innovating and winning in the Indian and Chinese markets, as well as discuss how the globalization of Indian and Chinese firms are reshaping entire industries - from manufacturing to retail to film and art.
